This painting is based on a poem written by the Sufi poet, Farid ud-Din Attar around the year 1200. In Iranian art, the Simurgh, similar to the Phoenix, is depicted as a winged creature in the shape of a gigantic bird, large enough to carry off an elephant or a whale.

This painting portrays the story of the Simurgh during a legendary journey. The birds have embarked upon an infinite adventure and have passed through 7 valleys and seas. Many perish, many give up, and some are annihilated. Thirty – purified by their efforts – embark on the mountain of Simurgh. They have the realization that they are Simurgh and that Simurgh is each and every one of them. They are one.
